A Father’s Love

By Pastor Phil Derstine (6/21/20)

Cornelius1st Gentile saved, God-fearing, father and husband

  • Acts 10:1-2 “There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band, a devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always.”
  • A Roman soldier (captain of 100), military man, not religious.
  • God is calling men to Kingdom mentality, invading, occupying, transforming, changing culture
  • Supernatural visions, angelic visits, confirmations, “Fingerprints of God.”

A Father’s Love

  • Fathers have a God-given, God-blessed role in the home – To lead and to love
  • Galatians 4:6 “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying,

Abba, Father.”

  • I Cor. 4:15 “For though you have ten thousand instructors in Christ, you do not have many fathers: for in

Christ Jesus I became your father though the gospel. (16) Therefore, I urge you to imitate me.”

  • “Lack of Father” Statistics
  • Because men are wired different, people often have the perception that Dads don’t love their kids as much as mothers…. because they aren’t as emotional or endearing. But Fathers have the capacity to love just as much as any other spiritual being… It’s just expressed in different ways.

A Father expresses love through

  1. Providing for his family
  • I Timothy 5:8 “If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”
  1. Protection for his family
  • Ephesians 5:25 “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.”
  • I Peter 3:7 “…giving honor unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel… that your prayers be not hindered.”
  1. Consistent Discipline
  • Proverbs 13:24 “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.”
  • NOT severity of discipline (not abuse), but consistency (opportunity to embrace, love)
  • Proverbs 3:11-12 “Do not despise the Lord’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those He loves, as a father the son he delights in.”
  1. Spiritual Covering
  • Colossians 3:18-20 “Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands love your wives and do not be harsh with them.  Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.”
  • I Corinthians 13:11 “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”
  • I John 3:1 “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God…”
